We’re seriously counting down the days until summer, and that means one thing: surfing is in! It’s all too common to gain a little unwanted weight before swim season, but fear not. We spoke to pro surfer Coco Ho from Hawaii to learn all about her jiu-jitsu workout Ginástica Natural, and it’ll inspire you to get totally toned and beach fit this summer and beyond. It should come as no surprise that a professional surfer needs to stay extremely fit. Safer today describes surfing as a “full body sport”. Why is that? Well, surfing requires movement of your tendons, bones and a good majority of your body’s muscle groups. Paddling engages the biceps, triceps, obliques, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, trapezius, and deltoids.

To be ready for this powerful sport, Ho trains aggressively with a jiu-jitsu workout routine called Ginástica Natural. Ho explains, “It’s great for mobility and agility. It started out as a warm-up for jiu-jitsu, so obviously it’s a really nice warm-up for the hips and joints while it fires the core.” The fact that it travels can be challenging, but this form of movement is perfect. She adds, “I try to keep most of my workouts achievable on the road – so mostly body resistance.

According to the Ginástica Natural website, this method can be tailored to suit any age and training stage. You can practice it indoors at your home gym or outside. These exercises were used by people recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. There are also training courses specifically aimed at preventing obesity.

We also got the inside scoop on Ho’s favorite workout tips. Ho shares that she “enjoys a nice warm-up stretch to wake up the muscles,” adding, “Integrating stretches throughout your workout saves your aches and pains (my water during your workout)…Working out with friends always makes it easier!” “

As with any workout routine, a solid pre-workout and post-workout plan is a must. Healthy eating goes hand in hand with fitness. Ho explains, “I always like to be properly fueled and digested before a workout. Having the right pre-workout energy is so extremely important to maintaining the value of the workout. Just know your hunger before a workout! I work from it. “

What exactly does this pro surfer eat to fuel her body with good energy? Ho reveals her choices Eat this, not that!, and said, “Something light like a smoothie or avocado toast before and electrolytic water throughout your workout.” After a workout, I usually think ‘fill up’, whether that’s with another meal or amino acids to fuel my muscles.” Ho has another favorite, adding, “Açaí is the ultimate superfood—packed with natural antioxidants and energy. When it comes to Ho’s beauty and wellness regimen, the pro surfer has an amazing philosophy. She advises: “Listen to your body. From a young age I’ve always had a good intuition for what my body was asking for – eat salad when your body needs nutrients, eat more carbs when you feel like you need more energy Body also directly reflects beauty rituals, since Your skin is quick to tell you when you need more of those nutrients or vitamins.”

We also learned a very insightful mantra the extreme water sports enthusiast learned from her father: “When the waves were good and we got too excited, my father would always say, ‘One is better than none, and neither is okay either.’ Because a good wave will always make you forget if you’ve had an underperforming session.” We like that positive outlook for so many things we deal with on a regular basis, don’t we?
