We had great training talking to Matthews. The best-selling author explains in his book, “No matter how old you are, no matter how bad you think your hormones or genetics are, and no matter how lost you feel because you’ve tried and given up on previous diets and exercise routines…you absolutely, positively.” have the lean, toned, fit body you dream of.” We asked Mathews how exactly you can do that. Matthews explains, “Most of your results will come from following a good diet and exercise plan, and sticking to it no pills, powders or potions are going to change anything.” He adds, “You don’t need supplements to gain muscle, lose fat and get healthy, but the right ones can help.”

If you’re trying to shed a few pounds, you probably like the sound of it. So we asked for more details, and Matthews goes on to explain, “If you have the budget, consider supplements because the few that work can improve many important aspects of your body composition and physiology, including muscle growth and fat loss, Strength, inflammation, heart health, mood, brain and gut health, insulin sensitivity, energy levels, immunity and more.”

Pretty interesting stuff, right? He goes on to tell us that exercise and proper nutrition are key. While the right supplements can boost work in the gym and kitchen, they’re not worth much unless you’re doing exactly the right exercises and consuming the right foods.

vitamin d holds up in sunshine, fitness supplements

To get started, the certified personal trainer/bestselling author recommends:

  • protein powder
  • multivitamin
  • Vitamin D
  • fish oil
  • creatine

In his book, Matthews explains, “Protein powder is most important because it facilitates the absorption of enough protein, which helps you lose fat and build muscle faster, burn more calories, and feel less hungry.” Optimal protein intake depends on your goals. But a good rule of thumb for most people is to get 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.”

Matthews advises that a multivitamin is the next most important supplement to consider, stating, “A quality multivitamin will help fill nutritional gaps in your diet, increasing the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals that support health and well-being improve at higher doses, such as B vitamins, zinc and chromium, and provide beneficial ingredients that are difficult or impossible to obtain from food.”

In addition to a multivitamin, fish oil and vitamin D are also important. Matthew tells us, “Maintaining adequate vitamin D and omega-3 intakes is difficult with food alone, and these benefit your health and performance in many ways. For vitamin D, I recommend starting with 2,000 IU per day and increasing your intake if you have any symptoms of low vitamin D levels.” Regarding omega-3, he adds, “Research shows that a combined intake of 500 milligrams to 1.8 grams per day of EPA and DHA is sufficient for general health and for physically active people 2 to 3 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day may have small additional benefits.”

Last but not least is creatine. Creatine is “an amino acid-like molecule because it’s the best supplement you can take to increase strength, muscle growth and post-workout recovery,” Matthews says, noting that creatine monohydrate can be taken whenever you want a good effect. He recommends taking 5 grams of it daily.
