Pearl braids have long been a significant hairstyle in the black community. Virtually a rite of passage among little girls growing up in the late 20th and 21st centuries, the tradition can be traced back to pre-colonial Africa. Though she may not wear as many pearls as she often does — Olympia appears to sport between two and six pearls of various pastel shades on each braid, sometimes topped by a pearl — it’s still a lovely reminder of how important and relatable she is to The Her mother and aunt’s hairstyle was for other black girls to witness her incredible skills.
